Prominent ear correction

Prominent ear correction, also known as Pinnaplasty or Otoplasty (Oto-ear). About 1to 2% of the population in the United Kingdom believes their ears to be prominent. The prominence could be one or both sides and the degree of prominence can vary even in same individual. People with such external ear deformity can be bullied and teased during childhood. It can affect self-esteem and can cause psychological distress in a sizeable population.

There are various techniques to correct prominent ears. The operation aims to shape skin and cartilage behind the ear to look less prominent. The scars are hidden behind the ear. The strong, non-dissolving sutures will be used internally to shape the cartilage.

In adults the operation is performed under local anaesthetic. The operation generally takes about 90 minutes to 2 hours. It’s an outpatient/day case procedure. The risks include bleeding, haematoma, infection, under correction, over correction, scarring thickening (hypertrophic and keloid scar), scar stretching, hypo or hyper pigmentation, altered sensation and asymmetry lateral canthopexy suture.


Split Earlobe Repair

Split earlobe is the commonest acquired condition after repeated trauma or heavy piercing. Sometimes the ear lobules could be over stretched, widened and elongated This can be reduced and repaired.

The procedure generally carried out under local anaesthesia and takes about 30 minutes. We use dissolving stitches. The procedure carries risks of bleeding, infection, under correction, over correction, scarring, altered sensation, skin necrosis and asymmetry. It is important that you discuss with your surgeon, the procedure, associated risks of operation and outcome. It is advisable that you wait at least 3 months before further piercing.
